No, the character always appears to me in his or her given sex; it's very
rare that I just decide one way or another randomly.

What I then do, however, is that when we're casting, unless the script
*specifically requires* that it be one gender or ethnic group or another,
we open the doors to every group.  At that point, gender or ethnic group
can change.  When it's a case of the latter, I don't change the names as a
rule, on the theory that mixing between ethnic groups will only continue
into the future.  (E.g., the captain of the Juno, seen last week, was
named MacDougan, originally I had a Celt in mind, but an african-american
was the best actor to walk in the door for that role, so we cast him but
left the name alone.)
