Periodically, at conventions, people ask me, "What movies do you watch
or grow up watching? What's in your collection?" Having just gone
through and for the first time itemized my DVD collection, I figured
I'd upload it for those with a morbid curiousity about such things.
It's mainly movies and television, some documentaries (admittedly
left-leaning), some funny things and just weirdnesses...so if you want
to know what a TV writer has in his collection (and yes, I know it's a
long list, I like to own my DVDs rather than rent them, and I have lots
of room on shelves for them), and what informs his (my) brain when
working on stories...here's the list.

It's a weird compendiium of shlock 50s movies, classics,
highbrow-stuff, and the sort of movies you'd expect a 13 year old to
buy...but it's what my tastes call home.

God help anyone who actually goes through and reads this whole list....

Okay, this is fun! I have many on your list, and many of the others are on
my wish list, but a few things popped out at me on a quick skim:

>> "The Andromeda Strain" <<

That's great -- I was _certain_ I wasn't the only person who owned this DVD
:-)

>> "Fail Safe"
> "Pit And The Pendulum"
> "Fall Of The House Of Usher" <<

I think somebody needs to reshelve something...

>> "Local Hero" <<

Another one I'm surprised is owned by another living soul!

>> "Lost Skeleton Of Cadavra" <<

Okay, anyone here who has _not_ seen this, go directly to Blockbuster and
rent it tonight. One of the funniest films I've ever seen, and yes, I own
it, too.

>> "They Might Be Giants" <<

Hey, I don't think I knew this. I mean, we know you love Meat Loaf/Jim
Steinman, but I don't think you've ever mentioned TMBG. Nifty. I could
watch this one over and over and over.

Now I want to go and catalog my collection! What I'm _actually_ doing this
New Year's Eve is re-ordering most of my books... I might finish sometime in
2007!

Happy new year, all!

Amy

They landed there because they're both on the same DVD.

Agreed.

Actually, this isn't the group, it's a movie, maybe one of my all time
favorite films, with George C Scott in the gentle, mad role of someone
who believes he is Sherlock Holmes, and is one day greeted by a new
doctor assigned to his case, a young woman by the name of Dr. Watson,
who finds herself dragged off in his loony pursuit of Moriarity, who
may or may not actually exist. It's a lovely, mad, beautiful film and
something I watch at least once a year.

I had a feeling Amy was barking up the wrong tree on this one. Dr.
Watson is, of course, wonderfully played by Joanne Woodward. I haven't
seen this film in years and didn't even realize it was out on DVD.
Unfortunately it was an Anchor Bay release and is now out of print!
(Amazon has used copies starting at $95.00, nobody else seems to have
it at all.) Maybe Universal will remember that they own this terrific
film and release it themselves someday. (Although I hope they can get
the commentary track by director Anthony Harvey and Robert Harris, the
brilliant film preservationist from Anchor Bay or its heirs.)

Back during the period when everyone was having such trouble posting, I
asked if you had seen the *new* 40th anniversary edition of "Forbidden
Planet" and what you thought about it. Now that we're all back, I'm
asking again. <g>

Also assume you have the 14 disc Superman Megaset. I'm curious. How
do the restored Fleischer shorts compare with the earlier public domain
release?

I'm glad to see you also own "Independence Day". Yes, it is stupid.
Yes it is trite. Yes it is hokey. Yes the "science" is laughable.
But dammit, in spite of itself, it *works*. The picture is gorgeous, I
can't help rooting for Will Smith and Jeff Goldblum and Bill Pullman
and the rest. (And Margaret Colin is one of my long-term Hollywood
crushes. <g>) I'm a total sucker for the ending. And things get
blowed up real good. Melt the butter, pop the popcorn, slip brain into
"neutral" and enjoy the ride. What's not to like?

I know Harlan would think I'm a jerk, and that I represent everything
that is wrong with SF fandom, but I've lost track of how many times
I've seen this one. <g>

Later,

Joe

It's one of the best SF films ever made, and the unquestionable
inspiration for Trek. Couldn't love it more.

Cleaner, certainly, and that's the main thing.
