     Hullo, Joe,

< There are two more novels coming out after "Clark's Law," one
by Neal Barrett Jr. and the other by S. M. Stirling >

Can't say I've heard all that much about Neal Barrett's
writing, but I do know of S.M. Stirling. I just finished reading
_The City Who Fought_ that he wrote with Anne McCaffrey, as part
of the Brainship series. It was one of the most military novels
that McCaffrey has ever written! <g> If the novel he writes for
B5 is anything like that one, I'll be looking forward to it.

On the subject of the novels, what is it with this delay in
the publication and writing of said novels? Dell Books must
realize that in order to make a series of novels based on an sf
media tie-in popular, you have to publish them on a monthly or at
least semi-monthly basis. One has to wonder if they actually feel
there's a market for the B5 novels out there, or whether they'll
just kill the line at some point down the road.

What happens is that the company waits until they know if the
series is picked up for the next season before issuing more books; once
we're picked up, they assign more books to writers, so there's always a
delay.

Like I said, we've barely gotten the paperwork signed; we're in
the process now of initiating a web site, getting the incorporation
papers, so we're still doing all the business stuff at this point.

I read at the Harlan Ellison home page that he will be doing the
voice of the computer starting with the episode that should air
near Feb 15th. Any truth to this? He still serves as conseptual
(I know I spelled that one way wrong) consultant for the show? I
thought he was going to become _less_ involved, not more.

 See ya,

also got a full time job and was able to leave the IGA...the
universe will be colapsing in on itself soon.

Yes, Harlan does the voice; where did you get the notion that he
was going to be less involved?

What does he *do* in the first place <G>?
He's important, but I can't figure out what he does for
B5--I haven't seen his name in the writing credits and I don't
know what a "conceptual <sp.> consultant" does.

Now that is a ~real~ shame!

Don't TPTB realise that there is life to the printed word that
goes beyond the TV screen? After all, Star Trek: TOS continues to
sell books...& at a rather good clip, I might add.

For what it is worth, we sell more B5 books per title than any
individual other title. The fans are out there!

The problem is that for the most part, nobody -- not the folks at
the book company, not Warners -- really understands the value of what
they've got here, anymore than NBC understood what they had with the
original ST. And they won't ever understand it until long after we've
finished making the show.
