I'll do this Back-to-front, question before preamble:

Do you think Babylon 5 will have any sort of lasting effect on
television series' in general?
Can we expect others to blaze a similar path now that it's being
proven possible?


This arose out a discussion about B5 spinoffs.  We figured they would
only be worth the effort if they were, at the very least, planned
storylines without a myopic focus upon technology or character or any
one issue at all really.
So we sort of figured that a spin off from B5 might be labouring the
point, as it were.

But a completely new setting, new directions.  That would be something
to see.

Once the "pure episodic" mentality falls away, the possibilites of a
television series become panoramic.

So, basically, we wondered if B5 heralded a renaissance of sorts for
TV.

Not for the next 3-4 years, no.  Once we hit TNT on daily syndication, on
a national network, we'll finally begin to have an impact.  Until then,
likely not.
