Joe,
Sorry to ask this again, but I am a bit confused:
Are Varn's People First Ones (I *believe* you said they were
not)?
Was the Great Machine built by a race of First Ones or by Varn's
People?
Is the Great Machine capable of seeing *everywhere* or can it be
blocked (by say the Shadows or Vorlon)?
Thx

I just wanted to thank you. When you said that MFE was your best
episode yet, I felt a little let down. It was a good ep, but
nothing super spectacular (the CG was nice). PONR was stupendous,
it made me worry the entire hour about things to come. It is your
best episode yet this season, give us a few more like that, and my
life shall be complete. Bring me an entire season of episodes like
that (Season 5?) and I'll give you a medal.

JMS,
Since you originally set up the 5 year story-line, has the
performance of the actors involved enthralled you to the point of
changing a character's fate? I would have great trouble ending
the existance of a character if the actor was such a delight in
bringing the character to life. How do you handle this kind of
thing when you want to stay true to the story, but see the
rewards of an actor's performance perhaps drawing more viewers?
Or just being darned good entertainment?

Joe,
I'd just like to offer up my congratulations to both you and your
team for an episode where the work involved was clearly extensive
where the special effects were concerned. A good deal of time must
have gone into the planning, preparation and art work for you guys
to have pulled all of that off. I wouldn't even try to guess at
how long the art work itself must have taken to complete --it must
have been painstaking. It was also good to see how accurate
Jupiter looked, along with Mars and Ganymede as well. The shots
on the surface of Mars were particularly awesome from my own
personal point of view, and I just wanted to say 'kudos' to both
you and your team. It's a shame that B5 doesn't get the media
attention it deserves. You guys do great work. ;-)

Don't you ever get really fed-up that B5 gets so much coverage in
the UK SF press (two big articles in SFX plus those awards, one or
two features a month in TV Zone, a feature every month or two in
Starburst) while at home you seem almost ignored?
Sorry, silly question<g>.

Does G'Kar actually think of it as *The Book of G'Kar*, or does
he just feel he's writing an autobiography/history of sorts? What
I mean to say is, does G'Kar now fancy himself as being as
important as G'Quon? In reality, I suppose he may turn out to be
just as important, but the idea that he *considers himself* so
reminds me of Sebastian's lesson about the dangers of
self-importance.

On the other hand, the legitimacy of his government has been
thrown into question for the past six weeks. Clarke needs *some*
backing to make his declaration of martial law stick, especially
since Earth is still democratic. He has the Psi-Corps and the
Shadows as assets, but neither one of them are tools he can use
openly. He has Nightwatch, but they are essentially a group of
spies with no real power behind them. What Clarke needs is the
support of the military, and we know the military has been opposed
to Clarke at high levels since the beginning.
What is to prevent the people of Earth from believing Clarke's
move is exactly what it appears to be: a desperate act of a man
whose crimes are being brought out into the open? How can a man
who has been openly accused of assassination, who has some pretty
damning evidence backing up the accusations, and whose very
legitimacy is being investigated by the government, effectively
overthrow the government?
For that matter, what are Clarke's motivations? Is he just
consumed by lust for power, or is there something else going on?

This all seems too cozy: (We have yet to see PoNR in our
area). Kosh isn't really helping fight the shadows, Delenn seems
to know about the architecture of the Shadow ships, and
Interestingly the White Star closely resembles a crude version of
Kosh's Ship.....If this were a novel instead of a television
series I'd want to flip ahead a few chapters right now. As it
is, I'm practically on the edge of my seat waiting for the next
revelation. I did, however, miss the first season and the Pilot.

Message-ID: <forum.sfmediaone.460917 at compuserve.com>
I hope you all out here could maybe help me with something, but
first, I apologize if this is a poor place or method for what I am
about to proceed with. I have used Cserve very infrequently and
don't really know my way around all that well. Anyway, here goes:
I saw a previous message here from somebody interested in
possibly setting up a sort of tape-exchange involving old B5
episodes. FWIW, I have some of season one, and everything since
the middle of season 2. As you've probably deduced, I would be
interested in the idea.
Now to the important part of my message. In
rec.arts.sci-fi.tv.babylon-5 I recently reviewed a thread of posts
concerning an outfit in California that buys British Bab5 videos,
converts them to American-signal standards (NTSC?), and resells
them for use with American-standard equipment. There has been
disagreement in the newsgroup as to the legality of this. I
posted a question of whether or not this was indeed legal to JMS.
Today I was sent an e-mail informing that JMS no longer reads the
newsgroup, but to look in the Cserve Sci-fi forum. Voila, here I
am.
So, if anyone is still reading....
Joe, if you're here, A) do you know what I am talking about? , &
B) If so, is the business legal?
I think the company's ph.# is 1-800-99-scifi, but I'm not sure.

Dear Joe,
Just finished watching "Point of No Return." Must say I
understand completely why that is the title for the third season,
because the future is really going to h3ll *really* fast. Hard to
imagine B5 as the nice place in neutral territory where people can
work out their differences peacably... in pieces, maybe!
The episode was great. Very very tense, without resorting to
major CG or action sequences. The characters and their reactions
were what drove the episode from the betrayal of Garibaldi, the
anger of Sheridan, the nervousness of Zack, to even the hope of
Londo... that is hoping everything wouldn't come true. Had a
serious case of the shivers when Lady Morella told him and Vir
their respective fates... the look they gave each other of "which
will go first and why" was extremely well done.
BTW, does Lady Morella's Sight work for just Centauri or
everyone? Londo isn't the only character whose fate has been
foretold thus far, after all.

> of the story ends... say it ain't so, Joe!

PS Reading the two recent articles on B5 in SF Entertainment and
SF Universe. Although I'm glad for the attention, it's very
discouraging to read an editorial which starts by saying how
ambitious your show and continuing storyline are... and then not
even a paragraph later blasts you for writing the entire season
because "other viewpoints should be heard." Does this guy
understand what a personal vision means? Sorry for rambling, but
it raised my hackles even worse than those Night Watch characters.

The editorial does seem odd when you then flip to the back of
the magazine and realize that the highest marks were *consistently*
given to jms scripts. That would appear to be a contradiction. I
think it's also a bit unwise to question the quality of a season before
you've even *seen* it. I suspect someone will be reconsidering those
words by the end of the season.
Also, it wasn't like I sat down and decided to do this for my
own benefit...this season, with so much happening, the show changing so
dramatically, it's nearly impossible to bring freelancers into that.
Next season, when the chairs have stopped moving around, that can
change and we can have other writers again. This was necessity, not
whim.
Elsewise...thanks for the kind comments on PoNR.

consider doing an on-camera intro to the final episode of Season
5?

Yeah, that'll *really* bring up the ratings....

You mentioned earlier that Hague was supposed to reappear in
"Severed Dreams" but won't now due to a DS9 appearance instead.
Was Hague supposed to appear in person in "Point of No Return" or
was he always going to have been behind the scenes? And did
"Severed Dreams" have to be modified to accommodate the actor's
not being there?

BTW, LOVED the music during the escape/attack by the Shadow
Ship!!! Gave me goose-bumps when combined with the visuals. How
on earth are you going to be able to maintain this quality for
another 2 1/2 seasons, <eg> and still keep your sanity, not to
mention your budgets? Anyway, keep up the excellent work. If you
need an architect on your staff, who incidentally would love the
opportunity to get into set design and construction, get back to
me. I'm very available, in a business way. IOW, I'm currently
unemployed. <g> And I _could_ be convinced to re-locate.

Thanks...and we just have to keep making it constantly better,
there's no going back now.
