Thank you for recommending Alfred Bester's, The Stars My Destination. It was a
powerful story that grabbed me right from the start.  Who would expect Gully
Foyle from his despicable beginnings to end up saving the species--and end up
doing it in course of exacting his revenge on those that marooned him in space!

I've never seen such character growth in the course of one novel. Mr. Bester
crammed alot of story into so few pages.  As you said before, "He is truly one
of the greats in the field."  I heartily second that opinion.

Obtaining a copy of "Stars" was quite a challenge.  I originally placed an
order with a local bookstore, which they subsequently lost. However, my book
club came to the rescue.  They recently offered a two book set: The Stars My
Destination and The Demolished Man.

It's nice to see these books in print.  I'm looking forward to reading The
Demolished Man.

       Whenever we step out on our own courage and dare to change our lives to
make it more in line with what we want it to be, 9 times out of 10 it works out
infinitely better than we (and others) expect.  Of course, there's always that
10th time...but the lesson obtains.  You can live a better life if you decide
to do so and take action.
