Thought you might be interested (though not necessarily happy) to know
that I finally got an answer to the numerous letters I've sent to
Warner Home Video regarding this topic.
Actually, I had my own letter returned, with some typewritten comments
added in the little space available at the bottom. My letter was
addressed to Mike Finnegan VP of DVD, but a handwritten note indicates
that it was passed on to someone named "Ernie" in Customer Service.
Here's what Ernie had to say:
"7/16/1999
Dear Joseph:
Thank you for writing. A timetable cannot be attached to any
potential widescreen DVD release of BABYLON 5 at this time, because
considerable cost and remastering issues are involved. But you and
several others who have corresponded have given WHV a lot to think
about. So keep in touch with DVD publications and retailers for new
release news.
Best Regards,
WHV Customer Service"
"Several others"??? With over 3200 signatures on the "B5" widescreen
DVD internet petition, I'd have thought "dozens" or even "hundreds" of
others would have written by now. Well, I'm glad we've given WHV "a
lot to think about." I'm just sorry they can't seem to get past the
thinking and bean-counting stage. *sigh*
Since Warner Bros. will presumably want to remaster the episodes for
HDTV broadcast anyway (wasn't this one of the reasons you shot the show
the way you did?) why should the time and expense be an issue? It
seems to me that by remastering the episodes now, and selling them on
DVD, they'd essentially get their HDTV versions for free, or at least
at greatly reduced cost.
Was intrigued by your comments elsewhere about the new series you are
working on. While I would very much like to see "Crusade" return, I'm
just as excited at the prospect of something totally new from your pen
(word processor, whatever.) Any chance you could do *both*? Or
shouldn't I wish that much work on anybody <g>?
Regards,
Joe

Interesting...all I can say is that I gave up trying to
understand the ways of Warner Bros. years ago. None of it makes much
sense.

BTW, Joe, I missed Wizard World (nee Chicago ComiCon) due to a
previous engagement.
What did you show there?

Not much, just a music video and took questions; they only had
me in there for 45 minutes so there wasn't much time. Mainly there to
promote Rising Stars.

Joe,
Just want to let you know how much I enjoyed "The Shadow of His
Thoughts." Londo's solution to his problem is the perfect Mollari mix
of compassion, ingenuity and ruthlessness. And it's nice that he got
that little hopeful glimpse of the future to sustain him. "Die in the
arms of your friend" --hearbreaking! (in a good way!) BTW, will he
ever realize what was meant by "saving the eye that does not see?"
I paid a price for my eagerness in reading this story before any of
the others in this issue. You can say so much in so few words, that
afterwards I found myself a bit impatient with the wordiness of a
couple of the other stories, which lessened my enjoyment of them. I've
learned to make every word count from the rigorous demands of article
word limits. Am I correct in guessing that you learned it mainly from
writing screenplays?
I've also just read the page proofs of Final Reckoning to review it
for B5 magazine. I would have read it in one sitting, except that
around page 175 I had to take a break. I was afraid I would start
hyperventilating. 'Nuff said, until we can all talk about it here.
Thanks for both. (Yes, I've already emailed Greg, too.)

That's about half it, the other half being a background in
journalism, where you learn to get to the point quickly and
efficiently. I'm actually quite pleased with the story.

It really is a kick in the gut, isn't it? When I was outlining
it for Greg, I remember thinking a) I don't envy him the job of making
this happen, and b) feeling really excited about what was going to
happen. It's about the closest I've come to Greek tragedy outside the
Londo arc.
