I got an email warning that there was a changeling downloadable on the
nets, went to check it out, and got hammered by a virus in the form of
a trojan. It began showing popups all of a sudden, and it kept trying
to get me to put on virusremover (which I know is bogus) and there
would be feeds coming in from audio...I've run spydoctor and pccillin
to try to make it stop but it keeps happening. In layman's terms,
since I'm not a pro...how do I get rid of this thing?

Every time I log onto aol, another window pops up as it tries to log
me in elswhere.

First thing, Joe. Go into the Start and run msconfig. Click the
Startup tab, then hit the button that says Disable All. What you've
got is an ActiveX control that's running this stupid thing; that
should temporarily stop it. Then, if you've got it, run Spybot Search
And Destroy. That'll wipe it out. If it doesn't, try AVG. Get the free
version, even though it'll bitch at you to upgrade to the pay
version.

I think there's a way to delete ActiveX controls, but apart from
wiping out your Cookies folder, I'm not sure what it is. I'll check
the Microsoft Knowledge Base and find out. Watch this space, boss.

MSIE \ Tools \ Internet Options \ Programs \ Manage Add-ons. You can
also get the same set of Internet Options via the Windows Control
Panel.

Thanks, all. I think I may have finally gotten it out, via spyware
doctor, which pc tools recommended. I'm still keeping an eye on it,
but I think it's okay now. Man, that was an all day process,
including setting up the new system I'd bought a while back but hadn't
yet put in, just in case this one was bricked. Mean little
sonofabitch. Wouldn't even let me restore to a prior version.

Again, thanks for the help. If it comes back, I'll go for the
solutions noted above.
