From ezk at fsl.cs.sunysb.edu Mon Mar 30 16:48:37 2026 From: ezk at fsl.cs.sunysb.edu (Erez Zadok) Date: Mon, 30 Mar 2026 16:48:37 -0400 Subject: [Hotstorage-sc] Changes to hotstorage SC emails Message-ID: <6BE9625D-276F-404E-984D-54B9BB5E460B@fsl.cs.sunysb.edu> Dear HotStorage SC, You may have seen emails just now that you’ve been subscribed to the hotstorage-sc at hotstorage.org . There is no action needed on your end. I just changed how hotstorage.org is delivering emails. Details: I used to configure simple /etc/aliases on my mail server, which kinda worked most of the time. Sometimes recipient servers with more strict rules would defer or even reject such emails, as they appear to some as an open SMTP relay. But it was simple to setup and worked most of the time. Recently I had to tighten my email operations with SPF, DKIM, and DMARC---and I also moved my anti-malware/spam filtering from an on-prem old appliance to a cloud service that offers lots of useful features. This improves email delivery and reduce the chances of spams and such. However, the new setup is more strict and I can no longer user simple /etc/aliases for hotstorage. So today I had to convert all hotstorage aliases to full-fledged Mailman lists. This works just fine and also adds lots of options for moderation, list maintainers (so I don’t have to do it :-), mail archiving, and searchable archives. One change I had to do is that we cannot use sc at hotstorage.org . Instead, the new SC list is hotstorage-sc at hotstorage.org . The full set of lists now is: hotstorage-sc at hotstorage.org hotstorage-chairs at hotstorage.org hotstorage-generalchairs at hotstorage.org hotstorage-webchair at hotstorage.org hotstorage-sponsorship at hotstorage.org hotstorage-publication at hotstorage.org hotstorage-treasurer at hotstorage.org hotstorage-publicitychairs at hotstorage.org hotstorage-localchair at hotstorage.org hotstorage-organizers at hotstorage.org You’d notice that rather than have a per-year alias/list, we now keep more generic ones: it’s easier to reuse those lists every year. That said, I first wanted to ensure that emails can flow again. We can figure out a better way with per-year lists at a later time if desired. Sincerely and sorry for the inconvenience.
