Knoppix worked beautifully on my Dell Inspiron 8000.

I don't know if it will work on the new 8200 I just got. I had issues with
RedHat 8.0 and the GeForce4 440 card, to get 1400x1050 working correctly I
needed to download closed NVidia drivers.

Aside from introducing new people to Linux, Knoppix came in useful as a
quick and dirty maintenance distribution. I needed to send my laptop back
to Dell, so naturally I wanted to erase everything on my hard disk.
Knoppix has dd so it works out well (not perfect, but the average joe
won't be able to recover data after a few passes of /dev/urandom over the
disk).

Knoppix also has mkfs and other useful utilities.
