[LUGSB] elusive menus

I'm fairly sure that the name of the menubar in gnome is 'gnome-panel'.  So, running gnome-panel from a console should do the trick.  Then, in order to have it start the panel every time you log in, when you log out select 'save current workspace' or the option that sounds very similar.  I'm using fluxbox on my laptop, so I can't try it out.  I don't know what could have caused it, but a search on google showed a few other people who have had similar problems.
