This is a good point, but regardless of our name GNU/Linux/Free Software
users would still be able to find us because we can be listed on any
LUG list.
But calling ourselves a LUG alienates FreeBSD users, and since FreeBSD is
used on campus, I think this is unwise.
As a Stony Brook LUG, we should focus on the support free software issues
most relevent to the campus, and this includes FreeBSD.
Also, in as far as Linux is a buzz-word that can attract attention, we can
still associate with that buzz-word on our flyers.
"Come to the Free Software Group's Meeting on blah blah blah. We'll have
a Linux and FreeBSD install-a-thon and a presentation on using OpenOffice
on Windows"
People interested in trying Linux will still take note, and Windows users
won't think that all the talk will be over their heads.
I'll all for using GNU/Linux, and abandoning all proprietary code but this
isn't necessarily practical; in which case just getting people to use as
much free software as possible is a great first step.
