Hi,
To prevent it from starting X windows when you boot edit the /etc/inittab
file and change the line

id:5:initdefault

to

id:3:initdefault

To temporarily switch to a consiole just press one of Ctrl-Alt-F1 thru
Ctrl-Alt-F6. This will switch you to virtual console #1-6. Press
Ctrl-Alt-F7 to get back to your X session.

To change the resolution permanently you need to edit your
/etc/X11/XF86Config file. It is well documented (both inline and in the
XF86Config (5) manpage.) and you should be able to figure it out.

My resolution for the new year is 1600x1200
