[LUGSB] Digital camera recommendations?

Hey all,
I'm looking for a digital camera. I seem to remember a few people
on the list are photography-geeks so I thought I'd ask here. Anyone
have any recommendations? Is linux-compatibility an issue?
thanks,

I would recommend the Fuji FinePix series for the best bang for the buck.
Unless you're really enthusiastic, a 2 MP serves just fine. 2 MP is
enough if you're just putting up pictures on the web, and not getting real
prints. Nobody appreciates downloading pictures over a few hundred
kilobytes, especially if they're on dialup.
If you're looking for something cool and small, you should look at Canon
Digital Elph, Casio Exilim, and Minolta DImage series.
One more thing to consider is the optical zoom. Digital zoom is pretty
much useless.
Linux compatibility is not really an issue. With almost all cameras, you
can just plug it in USB and it will show up as an external storage device.
Gnome will even put a desktop icon for it -- very convenient. If that
doesn't work, there are some cheap card readers available that plug into
the USB port. Most of the cards are FAT16 formatted.
HTH,
Akshat

There is no meaningful way to answer that without knowing how much you
want to spend or what you're looking for. Point-and-shoot? SLR?
I had no trouble getting my Minolta DiMAGE 7Hi to connect with linux....
it appears as a USB Mass Storage device with a FAT filesystem. If you do
have trouble you can always get a USB Flash/Memory Stick reader for about
$20 which will certainly work.

I'm not copying them as dvds, but just ripping them to 1GB files.
I wrote the following script that calls mencoder
--------------------BEGIN ~/bin/dvd_ffv1.sh -------------------------
#!/bin/bash --verbose
encode="/usr/bin/mencoder "
CHAPTER=$1
OUTPUT=$2
#lavcopts: gray
opts1="-oac copy -ovc lavc -lavcopts vcodec=mpeg4:vhq:vbitrate=1600:autoaspect:psnr "
opts_dev="-dvd-device /dev/cdrom dvd://$CHAPTER -font /usr/local/j2sdk_nb/j2sdk1.4.2/jre/lib/fonts/LucidaSansRegular.ttf"
ffv="-oac mp3lame -lameopts preset=extreme -ovc lavc -lavcopts vcodec=ffv1:vstrict=-1:vhq:psnr"
mjpeg="-oac mp3lame -lameopts preset=extreme -ovc lavc -lavcopts vcodec=mjpeg:vhq:vbitrate=1800:autoaspect:psnr -noskip"
opts="$opts1 $opts_dev -v"
pass1="$encode $opts_dev -ovc frameno -o frameno.avi -oac mp3lame -lameopts preset=extreme:q=0:aq=0"
pass2="$encode $opts_dev -nosound -o /dev/null $opts1:vpass=1"
pass3="$encode $opts_dev -oac copy -o $OUTPUT $opts1:vpass=2"
ffv="$encode $opts_dev $ffv -o $OUTPUT" #single pass lossless
mjpeg="$encode $opts_dev $mjpeg -o $OUTPUT" #slinglepass mjpeg
echo `date`
echo "$pass1" ; $pass1 ; echo " -- $? -- `date` "
echo "$pass2" ; $pass2 ; echo " -- $? -- `date` "
echo "$pass3" ; $pass3 ; echo " -- $? -- `date` "
rm -fv frameno.avi
rm -fv psnr_*.log 2>&1
--------------------END ~/bin/dvd_ffv1.sh -------------------------
USAGE: dvd_ffv1.sh (DVD Chapter you want to rip)
use lsdvd to get track listing (for making backups of your legally purchased, not rented, dvds)
A couple of comments:
For some reason I do this in three passes, really I bet it could be done in two, combining the 1st pass for sound and the 2nd for video statistics, but I got this sequence online and it works. I start a dvd before heading to school, and another before going to sleep, so time isn't really an issue. If anyone knows why this can't be done in two, or does it in two, I'd be interested in seeing it.
The way this is setup works well for me, subtitles work, the quality is no different from the dvd on my 17" LCD from > 2' away, and I'm sure I could get away with even less if I cared to play around with it. I'm sure the extreme lame quality is completly uncessary. When my eVGA Personal Cinema card arrives next week I'll get a chance to play around with recording TV-vector graphics (simpsons, south park) and find a good codec for that. This one works well for films on dvd. My entirely uninformed guess is that the lossless ffv codec will be good for TV, because JPEG-style compression handles vector-style graphics extremly poorly.
For doing audio commentaries, record the movie with the script, the record each audio track as an mp3, the use mplayer --audio_file or whatever the option is. You won't be able to ffw or rwnd, but that doesn't bother me.
I haven't noticed a difference in size between specifiying greyscale and not for greyscale films.
For subtitles, you need to do some stuff to build the font dir in ~/.mplayer. The steps to do this are in the manpage, search for font
you may not have the jdk installed in the same place, or you may have a different source for ttf fonts.
Both lsdvd and mplayer/mencoder are availible from freshmeat, you'll want libdvdcss for lsdvd
If anyone was able to build mencoder with icc I'd be really interested in seeing how you did it. It kept segfaulting on my athlon-4.
This script scratched my itch, your itches may vary.
To burn dvds, use the binary cdrecord-prodvd, and set your environment variables like the reame says.

Dear all,
The Stony Brook Perl Mongers will be meeting tomorrow Wednesday,
December 3rd at 6pm in the Computer Science Lounge (Room 1211,
Computer Science Building).
Robert Rothenberg will be doing a short presentation on the
Win32::EventLog::Carp module, a module which traps Perl error and
warning events and writes them in the Windows NT Event Log.
Kostas Pentikoussis will be doing a short presentation on CPAN
(the Comprehensive Perl Archive Network).
At the end of the last meeting, we started talking about what is
the best way to learn Perl. So if you like, bring books, URLs,
magazines, etc. that helped you so far and you think they can be
of good use to others. No, you will not lend them to others.
Yes, you can show off by bringing your entire book collection :)
Best regards,
Kostas Pentikousis
Rob Rothenberg

Today I tried to install vte-0.11.10-1.i386.rpm which
is required for a Gnome MUD client I was trying to
install and it gave me the following message:
[root at localhost rpm]# rpm -i vte-0.11.10-1.i386.rpm
file
/usr/lib/python2.2/site-packages/vtemodule.so from
install of vte-0.11.10-1 conflicts with file from
package vte-0.8.19-1
file /usr/share/vte/termcap/xterm from install
of vte-0.11.10-1 conflicts with file from package
vte-0.8.19-1
So then I tried this instead
[root at localhost rpm]# rpm -F vte-0.11.10-1.i386.rpm
error: Failed dependencies:
libvte.so.2 is needed by (installed)
gnome-terminal-2.0.1-5
When I searched for libvte.so.2, it did exist in
/usr/lib. So I am guessing vte wanted to replace that
file which is needed by gnome-terminal. Is my
assumption correct? Is there anyway to get around this problem?

Mark,
Thank you and the rest of the members of the Linux Users Group for your
participation in ICON 22. We would be delighted to have you back for
ICON 23 to do another install-a-thon and panel programing. We can
discuss this further via e-mail or you can come to one of the ICON
meetings. If you do want to come to a meeting, please e-mail me a few
days in advance, since with the upcoming holidays, we will not be
having meetings every week, and since I live in manhattan, I can not
make every meeting.
I look forward to working with you for ICON 23,
Jason Schneiderman
