I'll jump in here as a non-programmer, and non-cs student.
What do you want to do?
C's great if you want to write your own OS, or get your hands really dirty with unix. Personally, if I never had to touch C again I wouldn't mind. Unfortunetly I can't do everything I want to in perl, and I certainly woulnd't recomend doing HPC related programming in anything other than C or FORTRAN. Perhaps all you need to know is matlab. Doing things in matlab is a hell of a lot easier than looking up what you want in Numerical Recpies. Theres even some software out there for distributing matlab calculations via MPI.
