Below is the email that I sent to the ICON events coordinator and below that is his response to me. This should be fun. If you'd be interested in participating in any science & technology discussion panels or anything else, be sure and get in touch with Carl. Check the ICON website @ http://www.iconsf.org for more information.
----------------------------------------------------------

Hello,

My name is Mark Drago and I'm the president of LUGSB (Linux Users' Group
@ Stony Brook). We're a group of students who wish to promote the linux
operating system ( http://www.linux.org/info/index.html ). I've been
trying to think of when & where to hold our first install-a-thon. An
install-a-thon is where anyone who is interested in linux can bring
their computer down and we'll help them with the installation and with
getting started. Understanding that relatively few people would
actually bring their computer down to get linux installed, I believe a
linux demo should be coupled to the install-a-thon. I would bring my
computer down along with a few other members from the club, and we would
demo what we're doing with linux and what it can do in general. I think
that a linux install-a-thon would fit in nicely at ICON. Richard
Stallman, the founder of the free software movement, was a keynote
speaker last year, so there is obviously interest in linux & free
software. Please get back to me and let me know if this is something
that ICON would like to incorporate and what else would have to be done
for it to happen.

--------------------event coordinator's reply----------------

I'm a Linux user myself. I'm typing this on my Debian 3.0 box, and
iconsf.org runs on a Slackware host. I think this is a great idea,
but I have to run it past our executives. I don't anticipate any
major problems, but I have a limited budget and we pay for space at
Stony Brook. How big a room for how long would you need?

Thanks for getting in touch -- this should be fun.

Would any of your members like to participate in Science and
Technology programming in any other way, say by being on discussion
panels?
