I disagree. I think if the sender really wanted to garner email
addresses from members of this lug, they would start by looking through
the publicly available archives of this mailing list available here:
http://lists.fsl.cs.sunysb.edu/pipermail/lugsb/ These archives are made
available publicly so that those people who have questions which have
already been answered can find them by searching google or whatever. I
think it is next to impossible to keep your email address secret enough
that spammers can't find it and still give it out to those whom you
would want to get in touch with you. In my eyes the best and most
convenient way to stop spam is to use some kind of a spam filter on the
server side. I am sure that stony brook has some kind of a filter in
place because I give out my real email address 'markdrago at mail.com' to
pretty much everyone who asks for it and I get approximately one spam
email per week. That's right - one spam a week. And, it still annoys
me. :o)

You'd think differently when you get... wait, let me check

over one hundred spams per day.

There's a useful feature in mailman that obfuscates sender addresses. It's
better than nothing for sure. Many use it. I always do use it, even on
mailing lists whose archives are private.

This message I got from RH is most likely in response to a flurry of
complaints they've received for their upcoming policy changes.

Have you played with the naive bayesian spam filters? They work pretty
well, plus they're really interesting to play with. For every message
you can see a decomposition of the statistics on how it decided whether
or not that message was spam.

For those who have LG drives, you need to update the firmware first to correct
a problem with those drives.

As some of you may already know, LUGSB was asked to attend the upcoming
undergraduate recruitment event that the computer science department is
hosting. This event boils down to the department trying to impress
graduating high school seniors and convince them to attend Stony Brook.
Many clubs and graduate students were asked to send down a few
representatives and make up a poster to hang in the lobby of the
computer science building. So, I've been working on a poster. It isn't
done yet, but what I have so far is here:
http://www.ic.sunysb.edu/Clubs/lugsb/images/lugsb-poster.png I've
created the entire thing in SVG using sodipodi. I like the general
layout that I chose, but I still need to add some more words. I need to
add another section after 'events' just to fill up the page. All of the
logos in the bottom left corner are included to add some color to the
poster. If you'd like some other linux related logo added to the
poster, send me a link to an SVG formatted copy of the logo. So far
everything on this poster is SVG, so we could scale it to the size of a
building and not lose any quality ... and I'd like to keep it that way.
Lemme know what you think of the poster, and share any ideas you might
have regarding what else I could add to it. Thank you.
