Modern distributions like Mandrake do this by default. Lets not scare new
users away ;)

Konqueror has built-in sftp. Just type sftp://username@server and you can
access the remote server as a local directory.

Also try konqueror for web-browing and everything :)

My picks:

burn cds: k3b
watch movies: mplayer or xine
music: noatun

Don't know about Redhat, but in Mandrake these are the default applications.
They are also on the CD so you do not need to download and install
separately.

To all,

	I'm kinda curious, just as a survey of the more advanced Linux user
base out there, as to what kind of environment their kernels have been compiled
in. Basically, if you've compiled a kernel, within the past 6 months, that you
are using on a machine, now, I would appreciate a _SHORT_ response, elaborating
on:

CPU-family of the machine you've compiled it for: (x86, m68k, sparc, mips, hppa,
ppc, whatever)
GNU's classification of your machine: (i[3-6]86-pc-linux-gnu,
m68k-mac-linux-gnu, sparc-sun-linux-gnu, whatever)
GCC version used (2.95.[0-3], 2.96.? 3.0.? 3.2.?, whatever....)
GAS version used (2.11.2, 2.14.x, whatever)
And what kernel version, and whatever patches you've applied.
(2.0.x, 2.2.x... 1.3.x? Whatever is the most recent you've compiled in the
past 6 months for that machine.)

I would much prefer that you do not reply, if you don't know what this is asking
for or, it doesn't apply to you. Multiple machine-reports are welcome.

Much of this information will be useful for one of the talks I volunteered to
give, later this semester.

I have too many machine-configurations running, to list them all here. Anyone
so strange as to be actually interested is free to mail me, personally, so as
to not clog the lugsb mailing list.

Regards to all,

Hey Guys,
We'll be having a meeting this Thursday, October 30th @ 6:30pm in CS
1211. We're planning on having a mini-install-a-thon. So, if you want
to get linux installed on your computer, you should bring it down to the
meeting. If you need a car to help get your stuff down there, send an
email to me at markdrago at mail.com and hopefully I'll be able to give you
and your machine a ride. At this meeting we will also be finalizing
plans for our screening of Revolution OS which will be on Thursday,
November 6th @ 6:30pm in the SAC Ballroom B. This is going to be a big
event for LUGSB, so bring anyone you know who is interested in
computers at all, because Revolution OS is a movie that is important to
anyone involved in computers or technology in general (as is Linux). We
will then be holding a bigger install-a-thon two weeks after Revolution
OS, which would be November 20th. So, just a recap of what's happening
when:

-Thursday, October 30th @ 6:30p in CS 1211
-Meeting, Mini-Install-fest, Planning for Revolution OS

-Thursday, November 6th @ 6:30p in SAC Ballroom B
-Screening of Revolution OS   (w00t!)

-Thursday, November 20th @ 6:30p (location TBA)
-Full-Fledged Install-a-thon

Oh, and here's a list of topics which we would like to cover at upcoming
meetings, please post any more ideas for talks you'd like to hear or
would like to give. I would also like to know which of these topics
people are most interested in hearing about, so please post to the list
saying what you'd like to hear.

* Package Management (why, how, tools)
* RPM, DEB customization and creation
* OpenAFS, Kerberos, LDAP
* Wine, WineX, Win4Lin
* Which distribution is right for you?
* FreeBSD installation walk-through
* Apache Web Server Setup & Configuration
* Samba Configuration
* Security Setup
* How X11 Works (forwarding, window management)
* Networking Fun (Routers, Bridges, etc)

See you Thursday,
Mark.
