Those interested in a "linux from scratch" install, bring your laptop or
computer, tonight. I'll be working on this. There is a slight chance I will
be late; so do not leave early, in that case.

I would not reccomend LFS as your first-ever Linux install, however.

See you all there,

Mark, I'd like you to send 1-2 people (preferably including yourself) to
this event on 11/22. You'll need a poster or so to highlight what LUGSB
does, etc. Maybe some movie clips? :-)

This day is an important recruiting tool for us. Our department hasn't had
a serious recruiting day for some years. We need to show these prospective
students and their parents that we're cool but serious about our
study/research at the same time.

Can you think of a cool giveaway to do that day? Say, can we give every
interested person a DVD/VCD copy of the "Revolution OS" movie? I'll be
happy to donate DVD/CD blanks and time on a machine we can use to burn
those.

Please confirm this with me and Amanda, and get in touch with her directly.

Thanks,
Erez.

Subject: Nov. 22nd -- undergraduates

Dear faculty members,

One of the things we would like to do for undergraduate recruiting weekend
this fall is have posters and representation from undergraduate societies
and undergraduates involved in research/honors projects. So:
If you advise an undergraduate society (ACM, Linux, SWE, Honors,
Programming Competition....), could you please ask the society if they
could send someone to participate on the afternoon of Nov. 22nd? I think
the times will be between 12 and 3, but I am not sure.

If you supervise an undergraduate in research, could you ask them if they
would be willing to come for half an hour with a poster of their research?

We would like to set the undergraduate students up with colorful posters
in the atrium if possible, so that parents and prospective undergraduates
can mingle and be suitably impressed. :)

Please let me know who will be coming with contact info. so I can
disseminate details as the time gets closer.

Thanks!

Amanda

Sorry for the delay in responding, I was away from my email for the
weekend.

I'm very excited about this event. I think it will be great for both
LUGSB and the CS Department, not to mention the potential incoming
freshmen. I will be able to attend, and I'm sure we'll get a great
table together. However, we can't hand out copies of Revolution OS.
While it is a very freedom friendly DVD (no CSS-encryption &
region-free), it is still illegal to make copies of it. However,
handing out copies of Knoppix or some other distribution is legal and
will likely be more interesting for the recipients. We can play
Revolution OS on our table using a linux machine, which will attract
people over to our table. And, we can have another linux machine on the
table for a kind of live demo. The only tricky part is getting a poster
together. Fliers are easy, posters are a little more involved. And,
I'm not even sure what we would put on a poster. I guess we could just
make a big poster that says 'LUGSB: Linux Users Group @ Stony Brook' or
something equally as mild. Any ideas for something more exciting are
welcome. I'll send an email out to Amanda later in the day to let her
know that LUGSB will be attending. I'm pretty psyched that she knew
about our club enough to mention it in her email.

A good time will be had by all,
Mark.
