[LUGSB] USB camera

I need to buy some USB cameras for my systems. What would suggest that
really works with Linux without jumping through hoops. Needs to be easy
enough so as not to scare people who want to argue that Windows cannot
easily support any USB camera.
I am running SuSE Linix 8.2 Pro.

Not certain about others, but I've never had a problem with a Kodak or Canon
camera. Fedora Core 1 actually recognized my Canon Powershot 45 as such and
found all the photos on the camera and downloaded them. No special software

What I really meant by USB camera is a "USB web camera"... Like those

webchat.
Any ideas?

I've used a Logitech (I forget which model) for a while. It worked out
of the box on Red Hat 9 I was using earlier. I was very impressed when
I just had to plug it in and fire up gnomemeeting and have it working,
whereas I had to install drivers on Windows Me.
It made my kernel freeze on Mandrake 9.2. I haven't tried it on a 2.6
kernel yet, but I expect it to work. One caveat, though, is that you'll
have to use a different (read proprietary) kernel module if you want to
get a 640x480 resolution. The default open-source module can only do
320x240. I'm not sure how you'll fare with other cameras though. In
general, I believe that all branded webcams should work.

NYtimes is aweful: they force font sizes small, and request timesroman
fonts which are bad for Web pages. Web pages look better using chunkier
fonts like helvetica. So in Galeon, I configure the min font size to 10pt
and override the font type to Helvetica: it works great for me for all of
the Web pages I use.
I do the same in IE.

Hello,
LUGSB's next meeting is this Thursday, April 29th @ 6:45pm in the
Computer Science building room 2129. At this meeting Charles (Chip)
Wright will be giving a talk about all of the new things going on the
2.6 Linux kernel. Be sure and come down as this promises to be a very
interesting talk given by a very knowledgeable speaker. I hope to see
many of you there. Also, this will likely be the last LUGSB meeting of
the semester as the next one would land on May 13th and I think that's
right at the end of finals week. At the upcoming meeting we'll decide
if it makes sense to hold this meeting on the 13th of May.
--Mark.
PS - Really come to the meeting on Thursday - it's going to rock.
