Recently I found out that there is a proposed legislative
bill regarding the use of open source software
in NY State government. It has been sitting in committee for
almost 12 months and I feel it should be voted forward
to the general assembly. Here is the bill:
http://assembly.state.ny.us/leg/?bn=A08817
I wrote a letter to the chair of the governmental operations
committee, RoAnn Destito. You can read it here:
http://www.nyopensource.org/NYSOpenSourceBill-Letter.pdf
Hopefully some others can write her as well to get this bill
out of the committee and moving forward. This is her contact info:

Chair, Committee on Governmental Operations
Legislative Office Building 621
Albany, NY 12248
Be sure to copy the sponsor of the bill:

If anyone wants to help out with my project, the NY State Open
Source Initiative, http://www.nyopensource.org please contact me.

Hey everyone,
Just wanted to let everyone know that there is currently a vote on SOLAR
about whether the student activity fee for Stony Brook undergraduate students
should remain mandatory...and basically you should all vote for it to stay
mandatory. The fee basically pays for pretty much all non-class related
things including but not limited too all funding for clubs and organizations
on campus, concerts, shows, and many many events on campus. If the fee
becomes voluntary its highly unlikely that many of these things could survive
and the already sorry state of campus life at Stony Brook would degrade even
further. Even if you think that you don't personally benefit from these, I'm
absoluty certain that there is something you do utilize or enjoy that is
funded in some way by the student activity fee.
Anyways, thanks for your time. The polls are open until Monday, May 3 at
6:00 PM. Just login to SOLAR and there should be an option there that says
"Vote" or something to that effect. Anyone with questions should feel free
to e-mail me.
Dan

Hey,
There's a meeting today (Thursday, April 29th) @ 6:45pm in the Computer
Science building room 2129. Charles Wright is giving a presentation
about the new features in the 2.6 linux kernel. This presentation is
going to be super interesting and I urge everyone to come down. This
will also very likely be our last meeting of the semester as the next
one would land on May 13th and that is pretty deep into finals week. Be
sure and come down to the meeting tonight. I promise that its going to
be great. If it isn't great, you can all beat me up.
