What exactly is your issue with Firefox?  Linux *used* to have issues
with fonts not being anti-aliased and so forth, but all those issues
were laid to rest several years ago.

As for giving indication when you're downloading, it pops up the
"download manager" window when you're downloading something unless
you've turned it off in the preferences.  (Preferences->Downloads)
