I haven't used Redhat in a while, but I'm surprised if you have broken
font issues.  It's certainly not a Firefox issue.

I'm running Debian.  It's got a great packaging system that makes it a
snap to install and upgrade stuff.  You might also want to try Ubantu...
it's based on Debian but is designed to be more desktop-oriented.  I
haven't tried it, but a lot of people I know swear by it.

Funny you should say that, because having used Linux for everything
except games for several years now, I find XP's interface incredibly
clunky and inconsistent

It's what you're used to I guess.
