I've used Debian in the past but for Apache/MySQL servers, not desktop yet.

I set XP's display for "best performance" then remove the background image 
and set the background color to black.  SO much faster that way.
I'll even uninstall XP and install Win2k on a machine that has less than 
256mb of RAM.  I cannot stand slow response.
