I've tried Ubuntu. It's okay if you know that the first thing you have
to do is add the universe repository for apt / Synaptic and then get
gcc, glibc, automake, autoconfigure....
If you don't add the universe repository, you can't get mp3s through the
package manager. I'd recommend using Debian; by all reports, it's now
got all the advantages ascribed to Ubuntu previously, plus you probably
won't have to muck about too much to get a fully featured system.

I'm forced into dual use, and from what I see, Windows is simply missing
too many features: package manager, built-in themes (yes, you can change
colors, but that's about it), multiple desktops, readable config
files....
