Thanks everyone for the input.
What is described here is consistent with my experience with cable modems in
NC. The cable modem itself attaches to a MAC address, and likewise an IP
address is held for that MAC address. If you want to connect a different
device to the cable modem you can:
1. Power cycle the cable modem, resulting in a new IP
2. Spoof the MAC address on the new device to match the old, retaining the old
IP.
