Why do you mean "locked down sources.list"?

As for the choice of distro, here's my $0.02
I've been using Debian (Unstable) for 3 years now and been pretty happy
with it.  Over time my system has evolved from being a 2.2-based Woody
system to a 2.6.10-based and things have never really broken.  There
have been some small dependency glitches here and there, but otherwise
it's been good.

Many people swear by Ubantu, although I haven't tried it.
