I've been trying older and newer to no avail.  If they can't get their act
together after so many releases and produce a stable driver, then I don't
want to use their products.

BTW some friends off campus just told me that nvidia's drivers are known to
not work with SMP.

I'm even willing to swap my GeForce FX5200 card with someone else who can
get me a decent card (even w/ less RAM) that JUST PLAIN WORKS FOR ME.  (My
nVidia card doesn't work on MY machine with vmware and SMP, but it's been
working on Chip's machine just fine -- but his h/w is a bit different).
