I went and got a radeon 9250 64MB card for my machine. I just had one
little config change I had to make by hand to xorg.conf, but otherwise it
workd fine.
Alas, it didn't fix the memory crashes problem when using vmware.
Turns out I needed a BIOS upgrade to my Intel motherboard; there was a bug
relating to "memory allocation on systems with 4GB" as per Intel, which was
fixed in a Feb'05 bios release. I've been running vmware and other things
on my system for 24 hours now w/o any problems.
I'm glad I did that before trying to run memtest86 overnight: it would have
told me that my memory was bad and I would have merrily bought all new 4GB
of RAM (this time using expensive ECC).
Although I now think that nvidia's driver wasn't to blame, I'm disappointed
than not even once have they responded to my technical bug reports. I won't
be using their products for some time.
Erez.
