[LUGSB] Ghost files: incomplete deletion (or some such)

Hello--
I'm using Gentoo and Gnome; they reside on a pair of ReiserFS partitions
on a smallish legacy hard drive. Since the drive is small, I have to
manage space allocation rather tightly, deleting large files when
they're no longer in use.
However, when I delete files, they aren't deleted. The amount of hard
disk space used doesn't change, though I can no longer access the file.
The only way I can recover that space is by rebooting--remounting isn't
sufficient, nor is it a solution when dealing with the root directory.
Does anyone know what's going on?
Ta muchly,
Christopher (not Chip) Wright
