You sure those files aren't in use?
Try as root: "lsof | grep filename" -- man lsof for details.
Most filesystems under Linux allow you to delete files in use,
preventing further accesses by programs that do not already have those
files open, but keep the data secured for those programs that already
have requested a file handle. This may be your problem.
