Hey Gang,

I'll be giving a talk at LILUG this Tuesday, October 11th at 8:00pm at
SUNY Farmingdale in room 150 of Whitman Hall. The talk is titled:

"How Free Culture Works"
or
"Intellectual Property and Why You Shouldn't Call it That"

The talk will first cover the basics of what is commonly termed
intellectual property (copyright, patents, trademarks, trade secrets)
and then cover how this all applies to free culture in general and free
software in particular. Time permitting we will also discuss some
current events in the legal world that are impacting free culture such
as the Grokster case, software patents, Google Print, etc.

The way copyrights and licenses are handled in the open source world is
what makes it work the way that it does. However, there are other legal
aspects that threaten free software in serious ways. This talk aims to
highlight the good and bad about intellectual property and to debunk
myths that have arisen around copyright and patents.

While not a technical talk at all, there are few topics that so directly
impact how Linux and Free Software work as this one. Be sure to come
down to LILUG on October 11th and catch this talk. For more information
about LILUG or directions to the meeting, visit www.lilug.org

Thanks,
Mark Drago

PS - I made some flyers that advertise this talk. If any of you could
print some out and leave them around your campus, computer lab, library,
tech company, cafeteria, or anywhere else that is or is not appropriate
I would be very grateful. Thanks.
