I haven't used it, but read good thing about the 'automatix' program for
ubuntu.  It is supposed to install all of the programs/codecs/etc that
you would usually do yourself.  Maybe that would save time and help
people get a usable system (although it does download the programs, so
it may be slow depending on the available connection).
