Thanks to everyone for all the help. This laptop is about 3 years old
now, and I have been struggling with getting the wireless to work under
Linux for a long time. Ndiswrapper worked a while ago when I tried it,
but it was very annoying to manage it.

Last night I updated all the packages on my laptop (including a new
kernel and various utilities). I just opened the "Networking" window,
configured the device, and it worked like magic! I tried this a few
weeks ago and it crashed the system, but now I'm sending this e-mail to
you all wirelessly! Thanks again for all the suggestions, and sorry
that I didn't try to update the packages before asking (I didn't expect
it to work since it hasn't until now).

Avishay
