I notice that the ipw3945 drivers are available in the Debian archives,
from "stable" onward. This means that you'll very likely have an easy
time of it if you choose to install Debian, you might not even need help ;)

Which is not to say that other distributions necessarily are not as
easy; I'm just unfamiliar with anything else.
Ubuntu in particular may be just as easy if not more so; I notice their
"linux-restricted-modules" package contains something related to
ipw3945. I guess the thing to do at the install fest might be to try
Ubuntu, then Debian if Ubuntu doesn't work well.
