Agreed.  How about:

The primary purpose of LUGSB is to raise awareness of the Linux
operating system, as well as Open Source technologies, and Free (as in
Freedom) software.  Open Source technologies are those that make their
source code (the programming directives that constitute the technology)
publicly available.  Free software is software that can be used,
analyzed, and modified with no restrictions.  We plan to raise this
awareness by conducting regular colloquia to members of the Stony Brook
community.  A second purpose is to provide an open and supportive
environment to all who wish to understand and learn how to use Free
Software.
