Another iteration for your consideration:

The purpose of LUGSB is to support and promote to the
Stony Brook community the use of software specifically
developed in the noble academic spirit of sharing,
   learning, freedom, and openness.

The 'GNU/Linux' operating system, being representative
of these tenets, is the the focal software of LUGSB, but
the Purpose extends to any and all 'Free Software' and
'Open Source' software as defined by the Free Software
Foundation and the Open Source Inititave.

Rationale:

 - The "purpose" itself is short and succinct, with a
clarifying note below to mention Linux itself.

 - We explicitly state our alignment with the aims of the
higher academia, which this audience should understand.

 - We allude to the principles of Free Software without
getting all technical about source code.

 - But to avoid being vague, and since I suspect we can't
just throw a URL in there, name-drop instead. We might
even mention incorporation or contact info for the FSF
or the OSI to lend credence. (FSF is a charity based in
Boston, OSI is a non-profit incorporated in California.)
