[LUGSB] Cannot Play Video Files(Mandriva 2008)

I am unable to play any sort of video files on my linux box with Mandriva 2008. I have tried a number of different players(mplayer,xine,vlc) and they all fail. When I try to play the file the screen goes blank, and the puts me back at the login screen. All programs I had running were closed. Im am using OnBoard video.

System Specs
Memory: 2GB DDR2
Hard Drive: WD 1TB
Processor: E218 Dual Core 2.0
Motherboard: Biostar p4m900

Also, is there any program like Task Manager on linux that could be used to=
 determine how much memory each process is using.
