X is crashing. It should be logged in /var/log/something -- the name
of the log file will include 'xorg' and 'log'. Post that and we might
have more luck helping you.

>From the command line, top. To sort by memory, type 'M' (shift + M).

If you're using GNOME, you can open the system monitor...I don't know
how to do it with menus, but if you add the system monitor applet to a
panel, you can click on it to get the system monitor window.
