Actually, you can rent hardware for hosting a mail server for pretty 
cheap if you get a virtual private server.  I use a company called 
VPSLink.  Their cheapest Xen plan (which is what I use) comes to about 
$7 a month.  Just steer clear of OpenVZ hosting, since it doesn't let 
you set up swap.  The 64MB RAM you get is enough to run everything, but 
you do need a little extra help from swap.

I agree with Ilya that it's a lot of work to set everything up but not 
much maintenance after that.  You have to think of it as a hobby, 
though.  If it doesn't sound like a fun project to set up a mail server, 
then it will just be more unneeded frustration.  At the very least, 
you'll want to have an interim solution while you get things up and running.
