I just thought I'd give an epilogue for those wondering what I ended up doing.

I have my nearly-lost inbox file, along with the rest of my sparky
mail, saved on my desktop. I've been grepping through it manually
whenever I needed to find anything old. Although annoying and slow, it
got the job done without forcing me to try a new client. Then I faced
the prospect of having to read two dozen old homework submission
attachments, and I knew it was time to find a better solution.

I just installed claws-mail and it looks pretty slick for a GTK app. I
have a bias against GTK, but it's *much* faster than thunderbird and
seems rather nice and oddly reassuring on the surface. IMAP to sparky
works fine as well.

I'm still using sparky webmail, with the intention of scp-ing it all
over to my desktop again the next time it fills up. I can still keep
up with current threads on the go, and I'll just live with not being
able to access my old archived mail remotely.

Thanks for the suggestions, conversation, and pointing out blatantly
obvious facts that I had forgotten. This mailing list responded with a
lot more interest in my predicament than I expected.

Jon
