[LUGSB] Home networking problem

My two computers are connected to the internet as follows "Cable
Modem-->Unmanaged Ethernet Switch-->Computers"
I get different Subnet Masks for the two computers, hence I am not able to
create a network between the computers for file & printer sharing.
If I manually setup IP address and Subnet Masks then I am able to setup
network between the computers but then I am not able to connect to the
internet.

Any suggestions?

(Cable modem was supplied by the ISP and there are no user configurable
options in its web interface. It has only information)
