If this is for an embedded device, it sounds like you want something that
uses DietLibC and probably a 2.2 or 2.4 series kernel. If it's just an old
piece of hardware, I highly recommend Arch Linux (if it's P2 equivalent or
better) or DeLi Linux if it's an old 486.
