Dear members of LUGSB,
I am writing to inform you about a recent change to the structure and organization of LUGSB. As many of you may know, LUGSB originated from members of the Stony Brook Computing Society (SBCS) in 2002 with the desire to provide support, education, and advocacy of the Linux operating system. This division among groups with special interests is very common as it allows the flourishing of idea's within these interests. Conversely this division also reduces membership and each clubs presence in the campus community. SBCS welcomes anyone passionate about programming, computers or technology in general. It would be difficult to say that LUGSB does not also encompass at least part of these ideals. Over the past 8 years, LUGSB and SBCS have had periods of highs and lows. We feel that banding together, both clubs could benefit from reduced eboard management, increased fiscal prosperity, and increased access to resources.
LUGSB will become a special interest group (a subsidiary) of SBCS. I want to make it clear that this will not in anyway whatsoever be a dissolution of LUGSB. LUGSB has in the past, existed as an unregistered club. LUGSB will continue to host regular meetings as well as maintain its own mailing list and website. This will allow the LUGSB eboard to focus on making LUGSB a better LUG, that is provide better support and/or education for Linux users and promote free open source software. This will also allow us to proactively lobby for our members to different parts of the University Administration and USG.
The current LUGSB eboard will merge with the current SBCS eboard. LUGSB will maintain Erez Zadok as it's advisor. LUGSB shall maintain its own constitution to determine how it, as a Special Interest Group, will be run. LUGSB members, for all practical purposes will be considered part of the SBCS membership base. SBCS and LUGSB mailing lists will remain separate though members are free to be subscribe to both.
