Butting in from afar:
Install the latest Ubuntu and start using it, and ask a friend who uses Ubuntu
and/or google it whenever you run into trouble. You'll soon notice the
useful forums.
There are zillions of variants of Linux and BSD, but at the moment,
Ubuntu is the best supported and most functional one, and
sometimes it's easier to not have to choose.
