I'm not sure the blame for this falls entirely with stony brook. A large
chunk goes to the broken system of how registrars work in the first place
(not that there are many better systems that would be easy to replace the
current one with).

With a self signed cert people would *always* have to accept it after the
scary warning every browser tosses up, and conditioning people to do that is
asking for trouble.

Stony does get the blame for letting their cert lapse though
