Yes.

And what if I mount /dev/hdd5 to /snapshots/root and try then? No, still
doesn't work.

Can anybody tell me how I can do what I'm trying to do here? Essentially
I just want to be able to make changes to my root FS and have those
changes recorded to a snapshot directory. Unionfs can definitely do it,
it's just a case of avoiding the overlaps? Maybe I should try
pivoting...
