[Unionfs] unionfs 2.1.4: invalid option "whiteout"

I picked up unionfs 2.1.4 for 2.6.20.19 a couple of weeks ago, for a 
custom build originally based on DSL-N, which is based on Knoppix.

Anyway, I got a kernel error:
    unionfs: invalid option "whiteout"
on the command line:
    mount -t unionfs -o dirs=/ramdisk=rw:/KNOPPIX=ro,delete=whiteout 
/UNIONFS /UNIONFS

By removing "delete=whiteout", it works fine, and the delete behaviour 
is the same as whiteout anyway, presumably because the secondary branch 
is read only.

    * Is the option "delete=whiteout" still valid?


Inspecting Knoppix 5.x files doesn't answer the question,because it 
pre-dates unionfs 2.1.x
