standing license with C4, which has first rights to the show.

Hey, Joe,

Wilma posted the Hugo Award winners in SF Lit this morning...

>> Best Dramatic Presentation: "The Coming of Shadows" (Babylon 5) (Warner
Brothers) J. Michael Straczynski, Douglas Netter, John Copeland, producers; J.
Michael Straczynski, screenplay; Janet Greek, director <<

If my limited memory of Hugo history is correct, this is the first TV episode
to win since City on the Edge of Forever (I hope I remembered the title
exactly! <giggle>) the Harlan Ellison written Classic Trek episode.

I know everyone here wants to add our congratulations. I'm so pleased to see
this. You and all the cast and crew deserve this recognition, and much, much
more.

Well done! Congrats! <dancing jig of delight around room>

Actually, no, two episodes of TNG also got Hugos.

But what *is* significant here is that in 43 years, only 7 Hugos have
gone to dramatic TV series; 3 to the original Twilight Zone, 4 to Star Trek
(old and new). This is the first Hugo in 43 years to go to a science fiction
TV series other than TZ or ST.

(Thank you Dupa for sharing the news!)

Hooray, congratulations Joe!!!!! You and your team have earned this one - big
time!! Way to go Joe and company!!!!!! There is some justice in this world
after all (About friggin time!!!).

I can't wait to see how this year's episode(s) do in the next round of
balloting (Messages From Earth, Severed Dreams, the final 4?). Yeah, Coming Of
Shadows -was- great for it's time but, I feel you've surpassed it in later
episodes (and will surpass them, and will surpass them, and will ...).

"Hey Hugo voters: Yeah, "The Coming Of Shadows" -was- great but,
just wait, the best is yet to come - just keep watching...if
     you're up to it!"

Joe, A Toast (raise a glass of whatever you're sipping):

May this be the first drop of the downpour of awards you and your
   team have so rightly earned.

Yet, may that downpour NOT jeopardize the "low-profile-so-we-can-do-pretty
   much-what-we-need-to-instead-of-cow-towing-to-the-'suits'" power base
you work from. Although you may not be at Burger King, may you
continue ... to always ... "have it your way". <big grin>

(In other words, I hope your peers and fans continue to pour on the praise you
so richly deserve, that it does increase your power to "go for it" - "your way"
esp. telling B5 the way it needs to be told, even that it helps empower you to
pursue whatever else you want to do after B5 (but, of course, NOT until AFTER
season 5 <g>).

Yet, at the same time, I hope that the accolades do not attract enough
"attention" to bring on the "outside tinkerers" like network execs or
advertisers that think they know how to "improve" B5 (you and your team are
doing very well on your own, thank you very much). Or, should that be,
generate so much attention that "the suits" & etc. will be smart enough (or
intimidated enough?) to back off because they know they'd kill the goose laying
the golden eggs. Whichever provides the strongest basis for your continued
success, I hope the accolades help that, not hurt it).

Way to go Joe!!! I'm proud, elated, excited for you. Way to go!

Have a GREAT day - winning a Hugo has to be a good start.

Joe,

First of all, congratulations on the Hugo.

Second, Channel 4 over here in the UK have confirmed that 7 seconds will be cut
from Shadow Dancing to remove a stabbing in a fight scene. Whilst I agree this
is a far better result than I was expecting from Channel 4 (who have edited out
a lot more in the past), can you tell us whether this edit is vital to the
story or is likely to go unnoticed.

Thanks in advance
Darran..

Fm: J. MICHAEL STRACZYNSKI

If they cut 7 seconds, it's likely the 7 seconds of the actual stabbing
itself, which is implicit in what happens afterward, so it shouldn't have a
major effect on being able to follow the story. It's a reasonable edit, and
about what I'd expect given the general attitudes on TV violence among the UK
TV networks.

                                                                    jms

Fm: J. MICHAEL STRACZYNSKI

The CD rom has permission for all the cast photos used in the screen
saver, and there are literally dozens of them there. But under SAG rules,
there are strong limitations on secondary use of full-motion clips of the
actors speaking or acting in scenes from the show. If they were put on this CD
rom, the cost of licensing the clips from SAG would make it too expensive to
buy or produce.

What's interesting, in noting the number of votes in the nominations, is
that if we hadn't withdrawn the second Hugo nominated B5 episode, "The Fall of
Night," DS9 wouldn't have had a nomination at all. They moved into the
nominations when we withdrew "FoN."
