Howdy, Joe;
Well, an overall fun episode. It's good to be back in the saddle . . err .
. on the sofa, I suppose.
There were three distinct parts of the episode (well, a very minor fourth
part, but it was very stand alone): Franklin and Marcus on Mars (AKA "The
Honeymooners"), Sheridan and Garibaldi in the Zocalo (AKA "The Honeymooners"),
and John and Delenn in the bedroom (AKA "The Honeymooners").
The Franklin and Marcus scenes, while interesting, just weren't the
highlight of the episode to me. I couldn't really get into them. There were
some cute lines, but the very dry performance of the resistance leader left me
flat. Jack was interesting, and so was the second in command (loved the
"Texas" line, BTW :-).
I'm saving the Garibaldi stuff for the end, because it's very interesting
and I think I picked up on something I want to ask you about. So, on to J&D...
While Delenn was mostly something to bounce Sheridan off of (ahem) and
offer some lighter moments, I think Mira did a fabulous job. I'm very glad
that Delenn both feels more comfortable with their relationship (at least as
far as others' perceptions are concerned) and is speeding up the process of
their union. I mean, I'm sure she knows that they don't have much time left.
At this rate of two rituals per year, . . . well, you get the idea. :-)
And, man what a sight to see the unbridled effervescent excitement on
Delenn's face when she correctly read that last sigh of John's as defeat. And
I couldn't wipe the smile off my face when she yanked him into the bedroom and
gave that barely contained bow which seemed to say, "If this station's rockin',
don't bother knockin'."
I think it's clear that they didn't "do it," at least as far as making
little David. Delenn speaks of completing the rituals as a step *before* the
joining of their blood, which I take to mean reproduction. But I'm sure they
had a lot of equally satisfying fun. And why do I have the feeling that, in a
society with a declining population, one of the last rituals before marriage
may well be a test of fertility? I mean, pregnancy before marriage may
actually be a requirement in such a situation.
But I'm upset, Joe. When I first heard about the "woo hoo" scene from con
reports, I thought, "That can't be true. It's too stupid to be true." But
I've learned from reading you on the Net that we should wait and see the real
thing before passing judgement on it. Well, I just saw the real thing. I had
told myself, "It's too out of character for Lennier to ask such a thing. He'd
*know* it was some sort of expression of excitement or anticipation."
But then, damnit, you go and show me the scene. While the content, as
described, is one hundred percent silly and unbecoming the story, the
characters are one hundred percent in character and believable. ARGH! You're
a sick, twisted man, Joe.
Now, Garibaldi. I noted that he seems uncomfortable with his own actions
after each encounter. It's almost as if he's mad at himself or upset with
himself for doing the things he's doing. At first, I read it as the real
Garibaldi feeling guilty for doing what the programming wanted him to do, but
the final scene switched on a light in my head.
The things Michael was saying to those chaps was NOT jibing with what had
just happened. Garibaldi saw that Sheridan didn't like the attention. He
could clearly see that it wasn't going to his head, but he told the men that
anyway. He was embellishing his perception of Sheridan to play into their
hands. And I think the real Garibaldi was doing that. Almost as if Garibaldi
and Captain Jack had something in common: both were able to let their real
selves show in little ways; both are trying to say, "Look at me -- I'm all
screwed up." And Jack's fate doesn't bode well for Garibaldi's, I think . . .
I think I'm beginning to see a strategy here. I don't think Garibaldi
quit his job because his programming told him to. I think he did it because he
realized something was messing with his mind. I also think that he hoped that
he could work toward finding out what happened to him. When this group
approached him, he saw it as a possible means to an end. So he took it. In
other words, I think Garibaldi may not be so much setting up Sheridan as he is
setting up these thugs. But we'll have to wait and see, won't we?

I like silly and unbecoming as long as it's believable...which is a fine
line to walk. We all do silly things from time to time, and that's okay.

Joe-
WHOO HOO?! WHOO HOO?!?!?!?!
You, sir, are nothing but a big bearded tease!
Always like the Marcus scenes, though, and the bit about whatever made
Garibaldi's hair fall out.

Joe,
Best word in the whole thing was Garibaldi's subtly referenced, "her." You, of
all people, had to enjoy slipping in that heretical pronoun.
Most noticed words will be Lenier's "Woo Hoo" (sic). As this is destined for
permanent addition to the lexicom, at least the fannish lexicom, inquiring
minds want to know its proper spelling.

Your spelling was correct. And yeah...amazing the kind of implications
you can make just by chaning one little pronoun....
